The internet was built for humans browsing web pages. DNS was designed to give human-readable names to machines so that people could find them. But a new class of internet participant is emerging that doesn’t browse, doesn’t read, and doesn’t care about memorable names: AI agents.
Autonomous software agents — programs that can plan, execute tasks, call APIs, and interact with other agents — are becoming a practical reality. And they need infrastructure. They need to discover each other, verify identities, negotiate capabilities, and transact. Much of that infrastructure is being built on top of DNS.
The Naming Problem for Autonomous Agents
When a human searches for a service, they type a domain name, read a website, and decide whether to trust it. An AI agent can’t do that. It needs structured, machine-readable information:
- What does this service do? (Capability description)
- How do I talk to it? (API endpoint, protocol, authentication)
- Is it who it claims to be? (Identity verification)
- What does it cost? (Pricing, payment methods)
Traditional DNS — the record types and resolution mechanisms we covered in Part 2 — provides the first link in this chain — mapping a name to an IP address. But the agent economy needs DNS to do more: serve as a discovery layer that advertises capabilities, authentication requirements, and interaction protocols.
This isn’t entirely new territory. DNS has served machine-readable discovery for decades through SRV records (finding mail servers, SIP endpoints, XMPP servers) and TXT records (SPF, DKIM, domain verification). The agent era extends this pattern into new territory.
Agent Discovery via DNS: MCP and A2A
Two emerging protocols are defining how AI agents discover and interact with services: Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocol.
Model Context Protocol (MCP)
MCP, developed by Anthropic, standardizes how AI models connect to external tools and data sources. An MCP server exposes capabilities — file access, database queries, API calls — that an AI agent can discover and use.
DNS plays a role in MCP discovery through standard mechanisms: an agent resolves a domain name to find an MCP server endpoint, then negotiates capabilities through the MCP protocol. The domain itself becomes a trust anchor — if you trust api.example.com, you trust the MCP tools it advertises.
MCP’s design implies a future where domains aren’t just web addresses but capability endpoints. A domain like tools.acme.com might expose dozens of machine-callable functions, discoverable and invocable by any MCP-compatible agent.
Agent-to-Agent (A2A) Protocol
Google’s A2A protocol takes a different approach, focusing on agent-to-agent communication rather than agent-to-tool interaction. A2A defines how agents discover each other’s capabilities, negotiate interaction patterns, and exchange messages.
A2A uses a well-known endpoint pattern for discovery. An agent looking to interact with services at example.com fetches:

This JSON document — called an Agent Card — describes the agent’s capabilities, supported interaction modes, authentication requirements, and endpoint URLs. It’s conceptually similar to robots.txt but for agent interoperability rather than crawler permissions.
DNS is the foundation of this discovery: resolving the domain, establishing the HTTPS connection, and providing the trust anchor through the certificate chain. The .well-known convention piggybacks on existing DNS and PKI infrastructure rather than inventing something new.
x402: AI Agents Paying for API Access
One of the most fascinating developments at the intersection of AI and the web is the x402 protocol — a specification that enables AI agents to pay for API access using HTTP-native payment flows.
The concept builds on HTTP status code 402 Payment Required, which has been reserved since HTTP/1.0 but never standardized. x402 gives it meaning: when an agent receives a 402 response, the response headers include a payment request specifying the amount, currency (including cryptocurrencies), and payment endpoint.
The flow works like this:
- Agent requests a resource:
GET https://api.example.com/data - Server responds with
402 Payment Requiredand payment details - Agent constructs and sends a payment (on-chain or traditional)
- Agent retries the request with a payment proof header
- Server verifies payment and serves the resource
DNS underpins this by providing the naming, resolution, and TLS infrastructure that the entire HTTP exchange relies on. But more importantly, the domain itself becomes an economic identity. An agent doesn’t just connect to api.example.com — it transacts with it.
This has implications for domain valuation and selection. In the agent economy, a domain isn’t just a brand — it’s a service endpoint with a reputation and transaction history. API-first domains (short, descriptive, programmatically memorable) may become more valuable than traditional marketing-oriented names.
DNS as the Identity Layer for AI
A pattern is emerging: DNS is becoming the identity and trust layer for AI agents, even when the discovery and interaction protocols are built on top of it.
Consider the trust chain:
- DNS resolution maps a name to an IP address
- TLS certificates verify the domain owner’s identity
- Well-known endpoints advertise capabilities and metadata
- Application-level protocols (MCP, A2A, x402) handle interaction
Every layer depends on DNS. If an agent can’t trust the domain resolution, nothing built on top of it is trustworthy either. This makes DNSSEC — cryptographic verification of DNS responses — more important in the agent context than it ever was for human browsing.
Humans can spot a phishing domain. An AI agent following a chain of DNS lookups, API calls, and payment requests has no such intuition. It relies entirely on cryptographic verification: DNSSEC for resolution, TLS for transport, and application-level signatures for content. DNS is the root of this trust chain.
Machine-to-Machine Naming in the Agent Era
The explosion of AI agents creates a naming challenge that DNS hasn’t faced before: scale without human involvement.
When humans register domains, they choose names, configure DNS records, and manage renewals manually. But if millions of AI agents each need discoverable endpoints, manual registration doesn’t scale. This drives demand for:
Programmatic registration APIs. Domain registrars are increasingly offering API-first registration workflows. An agent (or the platform deploying it) can register a domain, configure DNS records, and set up TLS certificates entirely through API calls. Registrars like Cloudflare, Namecheap, and GoDaddy all offer registration APIs, and newer platforms like RobotDomainSearch are building agent-native domain search and registration workflows from the ground up.
Subdomain-based discovery. Not every agent needs its own domain. Platforms can assign subdomains: agent-abc123.platform.com. Combined with wildcard DNS records and automated TLS (via ACME/Let’s Encrypt), this scales to millions of agents under a single domain.
DNS-SD (Service Discovery). Originally designed for local networks (finding printers, Bonjour services), DNS-SD’s pattern of advertising services through SRV and TXT records could extend to agent discovery in broader networks.

The domains that will matter most in the agent economy aren’t necessarily the ones that sound good to humans. They’re the ones that are programmatically discoverable, cryptographically verifiable, and semantically meaningful to machines. That’s a new kind of domain value — and the market is just beginning to price it in.
